The WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines prepares students for a career in hospitality or retail. The program delivers the essential product knowledge and skills required in the service and retail of wine.

If you already have a basic understanding of wine then our WSET Level 2 Award is the best starting point for you.

It is a requirement that the WSET specification document is read before you pay. You can find this document under 'More info'.

What you will learn:

  • The main types and styles of wine
  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to make food and wine pairings
  • How to store and serve wine
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • Social responsibility surrounding wine consumption
Note: The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is not a pre-requisite for studying the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits Course.

During the COVID-19 emergency we are offering some connected learning (on line) classes. Connected learning is when students are learning with a teacher and each other via web conferencing technology as part of a virtual classroom. This course will be delivered through the Microsoft Teams platform. Wine samples for use in this class are provided in small 50ml bottles. These samples will be available for pick up from Ryde TAFE, 250 Blaxland Rd, Ryde.  Before enrolling please read the documents under "more info" to learn more about connected learning in TAFENSW and WSET Remote Invigilation. For online classes the examination will be available remotely.
