Spanish Wine Scholar

The Spanish Wine Scholar study program is geared for members of the wine trade and serious wine hobbyists seeking specialization and certification. It is designed to test your proficiency and is the most advanced and comprehensive specialist program on Spanish wine.

This course was developed and is administrated by the Wine Scholar Guild and follows the format of the successful French and Italian Wine Scholar Program. The Sydney Wine Academy is an approved provider of these internationally recognised courses.
The exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions. The pass required is 75%. Individuals who follow this in-depth curriculum and pass the exam earn the Spanish Wine Scholar title and the SWS post-nominal which may be incorporated into a professional signature (e.g. John Smith, SWS).

What you will learn

  • Spanish wine law
  • History, climate, topography, grape varieties, viticulture and winemaking
  • All major wine regions
  • Taste a wide range of wine from Spain
  • Overview of regional Spanish cuisine

While not a pre-requisite, we recommend that students have successfully completed, at a minimum, one of the following programs before enrolling in the Spanish Wine Scholar program: WSET level 2, Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) or Court of Master Sommelier’s Introductory Sommelier Certificate (Level 1).

As part of your enrolment, you receive a Study Pack and, (for some courses) a set of 6 tasting glasses.   Once you have received your ‘Course Confirmation’ email, the Study Pack will be available for collection from TAFE NSW, Ryde Campus. Instructions regarding the collection of your Study Pack will be included in the course confirmation.  The tasting glasses will be issued during the first class.
